Feng Shui Bedroom Checklist: 12 Layout Rules You Can Check Tonight
A complete feng shui bedroom checklist: bed position, headboard, door line, mirrors, windows, clutter, lighting, colors and electronics, with quick fixes and rental alternatives for each rule.
A feng shui bedroom does not require a renovation, a compass or a consultant. Most of the traditional principles are about simple, visible things: where the bed sits, what is behind your head, what you see from the pillow and how easy it is to move around. This checklist turns those principles into 12 rules you can check tonight, in order of priority, with a quick fix and a renter-friendly alternative for each.
Work through it with your phone in hand. Tick what already works, note what does not, and start with the first four rules, which make the biggest difference.
How to use this checklist
- Stand at the door and look at the room as a whole first.
- Lie in bed in your normal sleeping position for rules 1 to 5.
- Walk the room for rules 6 to 9.
- Check at night for rules 10 to 12, with your normal evening lighting.
- Write down the top three issues and fix them one at a time.
If you want a faster start, take one wide photo following our bedroom photo guide and upload it to the bedroom analyzer, which checks the layout rules automatically.
Part 1: Bed placement (the foundation)
Rule 1. You can see the door from the bed
Check: Lying down, can you see the bedroom door without twisting? Quick fix: Move the bed to a wall diagonal to the door. If you cannot move it: Place a small mirror that shows the door but does not reflect the bed.
Rule 2. The bed is not directly in line with the door
Check: Does the door open straight onto your feet or head? Quick fix: Shift the bed sideways out of the door line. If you cannot move it: Add a footboard, bench or chest at the foot, and keep the door closed at night.

Rule 3. A solid wall and headboard behind your head
Check: Is there a wall, not a window or a door, behind the headboard? Is the headboard solid? Quick fix: Use a solid wood or upholstered headboard. If you cannot move it: A freestanding headboard and full curtains on a window behind the bed. See bed under a window feng shui.
Rule 4. No mirror reflects the bed
Check: From the pillow, can you see yourself in any mirror or mirrored door? Quick fix: Move, angle or cover the mirror. If you cannot move it: Frosted film on mirrored wardrobes. More in mirrors and bed feng shui.
Rule 5. Nothing heavy above your head
Check: Shelves, heavy art or a ceiling fan directly over the pillow? Quick fix: Move them or replace with lighter art. If you cannot move it: Make sure fixings are secure and keep shelves empty above the bed.
Part 2: Space and circulation
Rule 6. Easy access to both sides of the bed
Check: Can you walk around the bed? Couples should each have their own side. Quick fix: Swap bulky nightstands for slim ones or wall shelves. If you cannot move it: At least keep one side completely clear.
Rule 7. A clear path from door to bed
Check: Do you step over or around anything to reach the bed? Quick fix: Remove laundry piles, bags and chairs from the walkway. If you cannot move it: A runner rug can define the path visually.
Rule 8. Calm, organised storage under the bed
Check: What is under the bed? Quick fix: Use closed boxes for soft items like linens; remove random clutter. If you cannot move it: A bed skirt hides storage you cannot reduce.
Rule 9. Sharp corners do not point at the bed
Check: Wardrobe edges, desk corners or shelves pointing at where you sleep? Quick fix: Rotate furniture or soften corners with plants or fabric. If you cannot move it: Drape a throw or place a plant in front of the corner.
Part 3: Atmosphere
Rule 10. Soft, layered lighting
Check: Do you rely on one bright ceiling light at night? Quick fix: Add warm bedside lamps and use them in the evening. If you cannot move it: Plug-in wall lamps need no wiring.
Rule 11. Calm, balanced colors
Check: Are the dominant colors soft and muted, with bright colors as accents only? Quick fix: Change bedding, curtains and a rug before repainting. Read more in bedroom feng shui colors.
Rule 12. Electronics and work kept to a minimum
Check: Is there a desk, a TV or a charging station next to the bed? Quick fix: Charge phones away from the pillow; close or cover screens at night. If you cannot move it: In a studio, use a screen, curtain or bookshelf to separate the work zone from the bed.
How to prioritise your results
After the first pass you will probably have a list of five to eight rules that are not fully met. Do not try to solve them in random order. Use this simple ranking:
- Safety first. Anything heavy above the head (rule 5) or blocking the path to the door (rule 7) should be fixed immediately.
- Layout second. Rules 1 to 4 shape how the whole room works. One furniture move here often fixes several other rules at the same time.
- Space third. Rules 6, 8 and 9 improve how the room feels day to day and usually cost little.
- Atmosphere last. Lighting, colors and electronics (rules 10 to 12) are easy to adjust once the bones of the room are right.
Re-check the list two weeks after your changes. Rooms drift: laundry returns to the chair, a new mirror arrives, a desk creeps closer to the bed. A quick monthly glance keeps the feng shui bedroom you worked on from slowly undoing itself.
Common mistakes when working through the checklist
- Starting with decorations before fixing bed placement.
- Fixing one rule by breaking another, such as moving the bed away from a window straight into the door line.
- Adding mirrors to brighten without checking what they reflect.
- Trying to change everything in one weekend. Fix the top three, live with it, then continue.
- Copying rules literally without considering your own room and comfort.
Rentals and furniture you cannot move
Most rules have a soft alternative that respects your lease:
- Headboard: freestanding or fabric panel.
- Door line: bench, rug, closed door.
- Window behind the bed: tension-rod curtains.
- Mirrored wardrobes: removable film or a curtain.
- Clutter: under-bed boxes with lids.
- Lighting: plug-in lamps and warm bulbs.

Example scenarios (illustrative)
These are illustrative examples prepared by our team, not user reviews.
Scenario A: the quick win. A bedroom passed rules 1 to 3 but failed rule 4: a mirrored wardrobe faced the bed. Frosted film on two panels fixed the main issue in an afternoon.
Scenario B: the studio. A studio failed rules 2 and 12: the bed was in the door line and the desk was beside the pillow. A bookshelf placed as a divider broke the door line and separated work from sleep.
Scenario C: the small room. A small room failed rules 6 and 7. Replacing a bulky nightstand with a wall shelf and moving a chair out of the walkway created a clear path and access to both sides.

Beyond the checklist: direction-based tools
When the physical layout is in good shape, you can explore direction-based methods. The Kua number calculator suggests personal favourable directions, and the feng shui calculator hub links the wealth corner, front door and flying star tools. Treat them as refinements, not replacements for the 12 rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important rule on a feng shui bedroom checklist?+
Bed placement. Seeing the door from the bed without lying in its direct line, with a solid wall behind your head, is the foundation most other rules build on.
How long does it take to go through the checklist?+
About 15 to 20 minutes for a first pass. Many fixes, such as clearing under the bed or covering a mirror at night, take only a few minutes each.
Do I need to fix all 12 rules?+
No. Start with the first four, which concern bed placement, headboard, door line and mirrors. The rest are refinements you can work through over time.
Is the checklist useful if I rent?+
Yes. Each rule includes a soft alternative such as a freestanding headboard, curtains, a rug or film on mirrored doors that does not require drilling or moving built-ins.
Should I check compass directions too?+
Direction-based methods like Kua numbers or flying stars are optional layers. Use them after the physical layout is in good shape.
Can a photo check replace this checklist?+
A photo check speeds up the layout rules, such as the bed, door, windows and mirrors. Rules about clutter, electronics and lighting habits still benefit from your own review.
Will following the checklist improve my health, love life or finances?+
We do not make such promises. The checklist applies traditional feng shui principles to make a bedroom calmer and more practical; outcomes vary from person to person.
